One More Win Away from League Title!

29 Aug 2017

The penultimate round of the Division 5 League saw our Juniors travelling to our neighbours in Louth village, aiming to keep that charge for the League Title going. However, there were little signs in the first half that the Joes were the undefeated table toppers! While the evening was quite benign, the heavens opened seconds before throw in. Just as the deluge abated Shane Mc Quillan opened the scoring with a point from play. Indeed, Mc Quillan, who has been a recent regular fixture in the senior full back line proved himself to the most potent player on the pitch at the other end in the first half! He followed his opening point up with a 45, as the Joes looked to be settling into the game. But this was all turned on its head when Liam Kindlon goaled for the Mochtas and Nicolas Browne pointed to leave them the ones with a two point lead. The Joes did respond well over the next seven minutes, with points from Sansom, Hoey and another brace from Mc Quillan, one of them being a fine long range effort. The only response in this period was a point from Martin Mc Gahon. But the home side had the best of the closing minutes of the half and points from Connolly, Garland and Smyth sent them in at the break with a two point advantage.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-6, St Mochtas 1-5

The Mochtas lead was stretched to three shortly after the restart with a Garland free. But the Joes got a much needed boost shortly after. A lovely flick from Oisin Mc Guinness put Robert Sansom through on goal and he made no mistake, burying his shot to the back of the net. The game was all square again and very much in the balance over the next period. A Jack Mac Namee point from all of fifty yards was cancelled out by Gareth O Reilly at the road end. Centre half Andrew English put the Louth village men back in front again with a fine long range effort, before a Peter Brennan goal bound shot was saved. Sansom was on hand to pick up the pieces and got the Joes back level, before Phil Englishby put the home side back in front in the next play.

As the game entered the final quarter it was still very much in the balance. A routine free for Mc Guinness levelled the game and so it stayed for the next six minutes. That was until the aforementioned burned up the endline and struck to the bottom corner of the net. This was a much needed lift for the Joes side and they did take the upper hand from here. Substitute Alan Mc Kenna knocked over a free and another goal from Mc Guinness sealed the deal. A very assured finish to a game where the performance was anything but for long periods. But the points are in the bag and the League within our grasp now! A Win in the final game will seal the Junior League Title for the Joes!
