Juniors Make it Five from Five

16 Jun 2017

On a sun kissed summer evening the Joes Juniors hosted the Sean O Mahonys in the fifth round of the Division 5 League. Going into the game, both sides were on maximum points, so a tough encounter was expected. With the pitch in perfect playing condition and only the lightest of winds it was excellent conditions for a game of football.

Playing into the road end, Ben Mc Loughling opened the scoring for the O Mahonys. But this would turn out to be rare score for the visitors, as they spurned plenty of chances in front of goal in the opening quarter. While the Joes hit five without reply in the same period. Jack Mac Namee scoring one and being the final assist on every one of the other four, with Gary Kinahan and Oisin Mc Guinness hitting a brace each. The town team did find their shooting boots in the last 10 minutes of the half and reeled off three points. But another from the lively Oisin Mc Guinness and one from raiding wing back David Kieran, who was excellent throughout meant that the Joes still had a three point lead at the small whistle.
Half Time Score: St Josephs 0-7, Sean O Mahonys 0-4

The town side hit the opening point of the second half to briefly reduce their deficit to only two points. But this was short lived, as the Joes asserted control on the game without over extending themselves. Another brace from Gary Kinahan and one from substitute Conor Mulligan had the Joes leading by double scores before Ben Mc Loughlin hit back with a free. Both sides then failed to take goal chances at either end within a minute of each other, but it was the Joes who pushed on from here. Peter Brennan hit a free, before Kinahan was taken down for a penalty. Robert Sansom stepped up and buried the spot kick and when he followed up a minute later with a fine point from play the Joes had a nine point lead with only as many minutes to play and the game as a contest was effectively over. The O Mahonys did get one point back, but further Joes points from Mc Guinness, Kinahan and Ian Mc Donald rounded off a comfortable win for the table toppers.
Full Time Score: St Josephs 1-15, Sean O Mahonys 0-7
